Since 2001 it is possible under Dutch Law to end a marriage within a few days without following the normal court procedure. It can be considered as an administrative procedure in which the marriage is firstly transposed into a "registered partnership". This "registered partnership" can be ended by the signature of a lawyer or a notary if both partners agree on several subjects which will be stated in a contract. This contract consists of articles about e.g. alimony payments, retirement payments and the consequences with respect to the housing accommodation of both parties. After signing this contract during an appointment at our office, our lawyer will send this contract together with a personally signed statement to the local authorities of both partners whereafter these local authorities will end the registered partnership by registrating the finalization of the registered partership with the respective municipalities.

However, please note that there is a disadvantage which has to be taken into account. Not all countries recognize this form of ending a marriage. However the number of countries that do recognize this procedure is increasing. If you are married outside the Netherlands we strongly recommend that you should contact the authorities to verify whether an administrative procedure to end a marriage is recognised. If not, the 'normal' divorce procedure might be the best way of ending your marriage. Unfortunately this procedure will take more time (appr. 6 weeks) and will cost EUR 980,- (provided it concerns a "standard" situation).

If you are interested in ending your marriage by following the "flitsscheidingsprocedure", please contact us by calling +31(0)35-5480321 or send an email to: info@flitsscheiding.net.
